The author's conception of the (existing) mid to late 1990's upgrade to the Su-27 Flanker. This aircraft, benefitting more from a favorable political climate toward the Sukhoi design bureau than from a performance advantage, appears to have beaten out its primary rival, the MiG-29 Fulcrum M, for future orders by the Russian air forces.
